Unique Beauty and Utility of Hurricane Shutters

The unique value of plantation shutters that make them an outstanding home improvement is that they serve to beautify and protect your home while being versatile and indispensible (if one lives in hurricane or windstorm prone areas). This means that hurricane shutters serve the dual purpose of being esthetically pleasing and being safeguards against illegal entry and weather damage.

The brief historical background upon which the plantation and hurricane shutter usage is founded includes the facts that these shutters were a staple of Classic Greek Architecture for comfort, privacy and security while providing stylish beauty. The hurricane shutters of today were used by the Greeks to close interior windows. This structure in building shutter design later inspired architecture throughout our Western world. It has endured from the time of the plantation mansions in the South and throughout the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries in the U.S. The basic purpose of shutters in ancient times is much the same as windows for us today, to keep out intruders, uncomfortable weather and sunlight.

Shutters in the darkThe hurricane shutter is a form of plantation shutter that requires careful selection as does any homeowner purchase that affects the looks, value and durability of your property. Conduct thorough research, asks lots of questions, read review and shop around both online and in magazines to make a well informed decision. The most important considerations when making this purchase include the facts that this shutter is heavier than a normal shutter and therefore some home repair in the form of additional framing may be required for the window casings to support the hinges of the heavier shutters. Also, you need to be mindful of the fact that extra wide louvers will let more light and air in than you might anticipate. You will need to choose between vinyl or wood shutters. Vinyl plantation shutters are more efficient to clean and don’t warp, while wood shutters look better and give the home a much warmer feeling overall. The choice between fixed or movable louvers should be easy if you like the freedom to open and shut your shutters and let the light and ventilation come in, then you will want the adjustable ones.

State-of-the-art hurricane shutters are available and made from double sided extruded aluminum louver and unique high impact polymer. This offers the best hurricane protection, insulation and energy savings, light control, security, privacy, comfort and noise control. They have the added value of being highly durable, versatile and stylish. Hurricane shutters come with a roll-up feature (as a protective and decorative design), can fit unusual windows (arches, circular and triangle), and have motorized vertical sliding shutters for exterior and interior applications, ultra clear shutters and one-touch louver control shutters. These are some of the 21st century cutting-edge advancements in hurricane shutter design and utility.

In conclusion, it is always wise to find and purchase from a reputable company with a trustworthy warranty against defects in both materials and workmanship. It is great to utilize plantation shutters for major or minor home improvement and nice to know the history connected to interesting decorating features of your home.

Best Shopping Tips for Purchasing Plantation Shutters

Decorating with plantation shutters is a hot trend that requires savvy style and fashion sense. Therefore, it is imperative that one think about cost, function, decorative style and long-term durability. Depending on the choice of materials, which are natural woods or manufactured products, the result will be cost-effectiveness versus durability.

The advantages of selecting the traditional wood crafted plantation shutters are that they usually have wide and movable louvers (that are 2 ½ “to 4 ½” in widths). The options in shaping are flat or the longer wearing wedge shape. In addition, one can purchase fixed, raised panels or the movable louvers that offer the added quality of adjustment to allow for light and air circulation in ones rooms. The increased cost is worth increased comfort and lighting for those who value an emphasis on room design.

The things needed to prepare before going shopping are the measurements of your windows, brochures to browse for styles and samples of shutters and internet access to help with all of the selection processes in the ease and convenience of ones home. Follow up on selections of shutters that fit the style of your home and are the right size for your windows. Plantation shutters come in narrow and wide with wider louvers looking more traditionally plantation style. Also select the finish or stain from a large variety of finishes available for wood or manufactures shutters.

One should carefully measure each window that will be receiving shutters. Measure the inside window width and length with exactness. This is the initial measurement that aids in approximating the cost of ones shutters. It may also help with selection of style as well. Choices of panels include the single panel arrangement, double panels or the double or two-tiered effect for larger bay windows. In terms of a fashion statement, it is customary to use a minimum of panels and if necessary, only cover the windows facing the street for continuity of style.

Next, locate the online or offline plantation shutter provider that offers the best deal for all your requirements. The advantage of purchasing online is that there are factory direct warehouse and wholesalers. Also, one can purchase from window covering online stores that deal directly with manufacturers at a discount price. Make sure to view shutter samples if possible and many online providers do have brochures and samples of their materials and finishes to send by mail. Finally, take the final window measurements according to the shutter provider’s instructions. Please remember that as a last resort, if the do-it-yourself process is not working, call a professional installer for help.

Shutters 101: Important Considerations When When Buying

This is a guest post from a reader regarding their experience when buying plantation shutters.

When looking for plantation shutters you should know there are a few different types. Premium wood shutters, for example, exotic woods and faux woods. Exotic woods such as mahogany, knotty alder, pecky cypress, heart pine, cherry wood and curly maple are a few.

There are positive features to real wood shutters. Real wood shutters do not warp and are lightweight but very strong. The stain finish is beautiful since the grain of the wood shutters is uniformed. The finish is also uniformed.

The major downside to real wood plantation shutters is the high cost. Generally they are used in high end jobs. Many hotels and restaurants will have them. So if you are working with a budget you may want to look into faux plantation shutters.

Now faux plantation shutters, there are many positive aspects to them. Faux plantation shutters are preferable since they are made with durable PVC and you can clean them with a damp cloth or sponge. This will not damage the satin finish. Your energy bills will be lowered since they provide great insulation. They don’t fade, chip or peal and can withstand humidity and extreme temperature. Faux plantation shutters come with a lifetime warranty, fully assembled and all of the hardware necessary so installation is simple.

I found there are many dealers online that can help you in your decision between real or faux shutters. So it really comes down between the two, real wood or faux plantation shutters. When we were remodeling our home we decided to go with faux plantation shutters in the living room and bedrooms. We wanted the versatility of faux shutters. Since we were on a budget the real wood shutters were just out of our price range. I searched the internet and found there were many different companies to choose from. They ranged from very high end to the more economical. The higher end ones usually were ala cart and could be very expensive. When looking for a vendor I went to Home depot. They were the most economical and had many different options to choose from. They also had a great deal on installation and service, which included a free in home sales consultation.

The sales person was extremely knowledgeable and interested in helping me choose the perfect shutters for our home. He also setup the appointment to get all of the measurements for the shutters. After the meeting, the shutters were ordered and arrived in 4 weeks. The installers came out in about two hours the shutters were installed perfectly.

Window Sizes: Why Sometimes Your Shutter Installation Isn’t Perfect

A lot a of people don’t realize that there are a lot of things that go into getting the perfect measurements for plantation shutters.  Measurements are the reason why you can’t buy quality shutters online like you would buy a book.  The major factor that needs to be considered if you are planning to buy shutters is that even though they may look perfect, your window sizes are not.

Height and width vary from the bottom of your windows to the top.  Even if they look like they are equal, there is usually a slight variation that can mean the difference between plantation shutters that have almost seemless looking joints and shutters that look like they are falling apart.

How do you avoid this?  Well, there are some simple steps that you can take.

First, measure the window yourself with a tape measure.  Measure horizontally at the top of the portal, then the bottom.  Next measure vertically at the left side of the window to the right.  You’ll start to see that there are very slight variations on the measurements.  Write down this information for later.

Second, have a professional installer measure them.  An installer knows the little tricks that are needed to get an accurate measurement for shutters.

Lastly, compare your notes with the installers.  If there are big discrepancies – or if they say that your windows are perfect when they aren’t – then you’ll know whether that contractor is the right person for the job.

If you want shutters that look great, you need to make sure that all of your measurements are accurate.  If not, you are going to have some horrible looking shutters.

Why Wasting Your Money On Shades Is A Bad Idea

A lot of people don’t realize that although they may be a lot less expensive, blinds and shades don’t add much to their house.  In fact, more often than not, there are a lot of peripheral items around the house that are bought because they don’t give the look and feel that most home owners are looking for.  However, plantation shutters are window treatments that people can be proud and can bring a great deal of cost-savings even though the up-front cost is a bit steap.

But why do people spend so much money on things such as blind or shades?  Well, it’s mainly perception and the sometimes the lack of foresight.

Plantation Shutters Are Too Expensive

It’s true, shutters are expensive.  However, often they are only bought once within the lifetime of the home owner.  Compare that with other window treatments, which are bought over and over again, you typically end up paying the same price that you’d normally pay for all of your other treatments that have gone in and out of style.

They Take Too Long To Install

Nothing worth doing is ever easy.  The fact that there is a lot that goes into the fabrication and installation of wood shutters shows just how valuable they truly are.  Sure, you can go and buy drapes today, but I assure you that you won’t be happy with them a year, or even a couple of months down the road.  Plantation shutters last a lifetime and they give your family a lifetime of beauty.

Shutters Don’t Provide The Shade I Need

How much shade you get in your house is determined by how the shutters are made.  Yes, some plantation shutters don’t provide a great deal of shade, but if you stipulate it up front to your contractor you can have them make them to your specification.

Don’t be turned off just because of the price.  If it’s really a big roadblock, start saving today and set a financial goal to get shutters.  If you are going to just keep buying other window treatments over and over again, you are going to be wasting your money.  Thiink about the value that shutters bring to your home and not about the cost.

The Shutter Style That’s Best For You

There are two basic functions of plantation shutters, one is for light control and the other one is for privacy. With shutters, you can meet both, of course, but there are ways in which you can vary these functions and it depends on your shutter style.

It’s nice to know that  a lot of shutter styles are available that you can choose from. It can meet your requirements without having to compromise any of its functions. Shutter styles fall mainly into categories of Café style, Tier-on-Tier, and Full height shutters. It is important to decide on how much privacy you would want and how much light would you want to control to find the right shutter style that will be best for you.

Let’s explore some of these shutter styles to help you choose what’s best for you.

A. Cafe style. This shutter style has shutters only at the bottom half of your window while the upper part is left open. At times, you fill the upper part with glass and fashioned with curtains or draperies. This is ideal in a place where you don’t get much light because of trees or any other light obstructions, and so you would want to have that most light entering your house. By keeping the upper part open, you will retain the  light  and you can still have maximum privacy even just at the bottom part.

B. Full height shutters. This is ideal for full privacy because the shutters are installed from top to the bottom of your window pane. Light is controlled by adjusting the angle of shutter slats.

C. Tier-on-Tier. With this shutter style, the upper and lower half is opened and closed independently of each other. You can leave the bottom or the upper part open or you can close both or any way you want it.  With this style you can have both the advantages of the two previous styles. You can open the upper part to let in largest amount of light or you can close both the upper and lower portions to gain the fullest privacy.

You can have a lot of combination styles for your shutters depending on your needs and what your company can offer. With these shutter styles, privacy, light control and aesthetics can definitely be joined in one package.

Selecting Colors For Your Shutters – If You Go For Painted Ones

If you go for painted shutters, you can always be safe to choose the standard colors for them. White, cream or gray, they never go wrong with any interior. But if you’re brave and wants to choose another color or have a little twist in home design, then think about it well.

In Orange County, shutter companies have a lot of available colors. You  can choose from a variety of standards to contemporary types. Some companies make it available upon request.  Some will readily give you samples so it’ll be easier for you to decide.

You don’t need to become an expert; and choosing the right colors for your shutters that will suit your taste doesn’t need to become very hard. Consider these tips to help make up your mind on what color to choose:

  • Collect samples  from your provider and see if it coördinates with your interiors. If you want to emphasize a piece of furniture, you can have your shutter in the same color or in a lighter shade with your furniture .
  • Contrast and don’t clash the color of your shutters to the window trim. Your shutter, window trim, door and roof are usually  painted in colors that complement each other. If you cannot find the exact color that will match with your roof and your door, the least you could do is to look for the nearest shade. Doing so will give it harmony and balance.
  • Go around your neighborhood. See what color would stand out. If you are near the seashore of Huntington Beach, a shutter painted in blue would give you a very calm feel. If a lot of trees surrounds you,  go for a bolder look like reddish-brown. Just let your imagination wander and you would be surprise with the effects.

In Orange County, having painted shutters has already grown in popularity compared to the traditional ones. By choosing the right color, you can accentuate your home style and make your house more interesting.

Match the color to your personality and have fun!
